What does a magician do when he can’t work as usual ?

People keep on asking me what I have been up to during lockdown as most of the events I do have either been cancelled or postponed.

Before I tell you,. let me tell you what my normal week used to look like.

The week would normally start on a Sunday evening,  sitting down and writing down everything that I needed to do during the coming week, making sure meetings and events that were on my calendar were confirmed, all my Social Media Content was ready, even if I didn’t always have the content yet I would write down the idea or theme.

In a normal week I would be speaking to venues to either arrange meetings or to see what events they had coming up where a magician would be suitable. I am on the preferred suppliers list for a wide range of venues and hotels from the Langham, Sky Gardens to Chiswick House.

Most of my events take place in the UK with a fortunate few being International, including weddings and trade shows but since lockdown I have been keeping myself busy by :

Firstly, Staying in contact with the venues and suppliers I work with to see how they are and if we can help each other out.. This could be as simple as sharing posts on social media, or putting them in contact with people who could help them or, for example, be asked to write a blog about how I have survived lockdown hence the reason that you are reading this blog post. I hope you enjoy reading it.

At the beginning of lockdown I created a vision board with everything I wanted to do over the next year, not realising the lockdown would last this long! On my board I focused on learning the saxophone to traveling more, to the dream of having my own tv show and starting my own podcast using my own recording studio.

So how have I done ? Let me break it down for you.

  1. On 18th of June I released the first episode of my podcast called “Magic Talks” at the time of writing this blog there are now 17 episodes with a new release  every Friday, I love recording them. One question I get asked is how hard is it to record a podcast so let me explain how I make an episode. My first thoughts are to the content. I have to decide what I’m going to talk about, normally mulling over a few ideas at  the beginning of the week and by Wednesday afternoon I have decided on the topic having written bullet points so I can keep track of what I have talked about. When it comes to the magic story part of the show I let my followers on Instagram choose by creating a poll. Then on Thursday afternoon I sit down at my desk, plug my mic in and start talking, once its all recorded I import it into an app called anchor to add the jingles and start editing. You can find my podcasts on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Anchor and Podchaser, just search for Magic Talks or visit https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/magic-talks-1269222

2. I have got my passion for photography back to. There is something relaxing about going out and exploring the beauty of the world around us, but also looking at objects in a different way. Whilst there are lots of apps out there to make photos look amazing, I think the best way to take a photo is to understand everything your camera can do by taking if off Auto and  using manual settings. The only photo editing I do is removing a few things from the image or cropping it, everything else is done before I press the shutter button on the camera. You can see some of my photos by following me on Instagram by visiting https://www.instagram.com/magicmanlondon/

3. I am still focusing on having my own magic show on tv, either Netflix or Sky (I’m aiming high) and whilst there’s not a lot I can do at the moment, every time I have an idea for it or an effect, I think would work I write it down in my notebook.

4. Meditation has become an integral part of my new daily routine. I had meditated for years before lockdown so I knew what the benefits were but I thought I would look into it a little further. I have learnt so much about myself during lockdown by changing my mindset on certain topics, changing my morning routine.  Where I used to go to bed around 1-3 am, as that’s when I thought I was at my most creative a good friend of mine recommended writing in a journal and investigating manifestation which I did and highly recommend that you do to.

So what does my routine look like now

  1. Rather than doing to bed between 1-3 I now turn my gadgets off at 10pm and in bed by 11pm.
  2. I wake up at 6:30 rather than 10 or 11am and I start the day with meditation (I currently use headspace) for around 20 minutes drinking water and writing in my journal. In my water, on my skin and in a diffuser I use dōTERRA oils I then have a nice breakfast and do a few little things to get ready for the day.
  3. At 9am I turn on my phone and iPad and start my day.

Finally, someone asked me the other day what I’m looking forward to the most about going back to normal? Here are a few things,

  1. Going back to performing the magic I know and love
  2. Catching up with all my friends and contacts I have made over the years and meeting the great friends I have made during lockdown on facebook and LinkedIn, especially people from the UK Event Professionals Redundancy due to to Corona.
  3. Exploring the world again

So that’s what I have been up-to, what has everyone else been doing? What are you looking forward to once normal life has resumed?
