Christmas parties are being redefined by a new generation of attendees, as organisers move away from traditional formats in favour of more flexible, inclusive, and experience-led celebrations.
Insight from Arena Racing Company (ARC) shows that expectations are shifting. Rather than structured, formal three-course dinners, planners are increasingly responding to demand for informal, interactive environments that allow guests to shape their own experience.
The shift towards what some are calling “the anti-ordinary” is being driven in part by younger audiences, as well as changes across modern workforces. Attendees are prioritising experiences that feel social, inclusive and less rigid, with a clear appetite for variety, shared activities, varied entertainment, and formats that allow for movement and choice. Inclusivity is also key, with growing demand for low and no-alcohol options alongside more traditional offerings.
Work-life balance is another influencing factor, with increased interest in daytime Christmas parties as an alternative to late-night events, particularly among those looking to avoid encroaching on personal time. At the same time, tighter budgets and more considered booking patterns are driving smaller group celebrations, earlier decision-making, and a greater focus on value.
ARC and its conference and events arm, YourVenue, which represents 16 racecourses nationwide, has seen these changes reflected in client demand. The organisation is responding to these changes with the launch of an immersive multi-experience Après Village Christmas experience at Doncaster Racecourse. For the first time, ARC will be offering both a daytime option and an outdoor space, reflecting a growing appetite for time spent outdoors and varied experiences.
The experience will also include a variety of indoor attractions such as a Festive Express train, curling as a team-building activity, and an indoor roller rink. New this year will be an outdoor tipi lounge with firepits for marshmallow toasting, karaoke booths, and a catwalk, as well as a Ski Shop photo experience and live DJs and entertainers; all set within timber chalets and a backdrop of twinkling winter scenes.
“Across our venues, we’re seeing a clear shift in what people want from Christmas parties,” said Clare Marsden, Regional Event Sales Manager, Arena Racing Company. “They are no longer about a one-size-fits-all format. There is much more demand for experiences that feel relaxed, social and easy to organise. The focus has moved towards flexibility, choice and creating immersive environments where people can connect and network in a more organic way.”
Across the industry, this signals a wider evolution in how Christmas parties are conceived. No longer defined by tradition alone, they are increasingly shaped by audience expectations, with planners prioritising inclusivity, variety and adaptability.
The Doncaster Racecourse experience will be available for both shared parties and private corporate events, reflecting the continued demand for group-based celebrations alongside bespoke company bookings.
