Athena, one of Leicester’s premier event venues, has taken a significant step towards a greener future by installing a state-of-the-art solar panel system on its iconic building in the city centre.
The move marks Athena’s commitment to environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability, aligning with both local and national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy.
“We’re proud to be investing in the future—not just of our business, but of our community and planet,” said Hira Ram, Head of Events at Athena. “The solar installation is a meaningful step forward in reducing our environmental impact while continuing to deliver exceptional experiences for our guests.”
The Environmental Impact: A 30-Year Outlook
The newly installed solar system is expected to generate approximately 3,005,221 kWh of clean electricity over the next 30 years, significantly offsetting the venue’s energy use and reducing its carbon footprint by an estimated 871 tons per year.
That’s equivalent to:
- million miles driven by an average car
- 38,169 trees planted
- 50,000 round-trip flights between London and Mykonos
Known for hosting a wide range of events—from corporate functions to cultural celebrations—Athena now combines its striking Art Deco architecture with forward-thinking energy innovation.
“Sustainability is increasingly important to our clients, and we want to lead by example,” added Hira Ram. “We’re excited to offer a venue that not only looks spectacular, but also operates more responsibly.”
This move places Athena among a growing number of UK venues making real changes to operate more sustainably, setting a powerful example for the wider hospitality and events industry.
