Sustainable Goals and Successes with Rebecca Hurley from BMA House

What’s your name and what do you do? Hi, I’m Rebecca Hurley, I’m Venue Marketing Manager for BMA House. I’m responsible for promoting our gorgeous central London venue & overseeing our marketing activities.

1. Event Footprint Reduction
What specific steps has your organisation taken to reduce the environmental impact of the events you help produce?

“Sustainability isn’t something we impose; it’s something we nurture. Every team member at BMA House is undergoing Carbon Literacy certification, ensuring our staff understand the climate context, the actions we take, and the role they personally play. We also offer British Sign Language training to enhance inclusivity and champion equitable engagement across all events.

Our sustainability “green teams” meet regularly to innovate and trial new ideas – from coffee grounds composting to bird-friendly fat balls made from surplus kitchen ingredients. In our garden, we’re in discussion to install bug hotels, supporting biodiversity; and recently we went out and about in our community planting wildflowers in Camden with Think&Do.

Externally, we’ve become a hub for the sustainability conversation. Over the past six months alone, we’ve hosted or participated in key industry events including the Sustainable Event Buyers Guide launch, Greengage Sustainability Awards and the Global Good Awards. These events choose BMA House not just for our facilities – but because our values align.”

2. Innovation in Sustainability
What new technologies or innovations is your company using to create more sustainable event experiences?

“In 2024, we launched a bespoke carbon calculator tool in collaboration with Planet Mark. Offered free to all clients, this tool estimates the emissions associated with their events – breaking down food, travel, accommodation, and waste. Clients receive tailored insights and suggestions on how to reduce their impact at future events, and those who return can track their progress over time. It’s been widely praised, clients have called it “incredibly useful” and noted that BMA House is one of the only venues currently offering this level of data-driven support.

This tool not only helps clients plan more responsibly, it positions us as an active partner in their sustainability journey.”

3. Carbon Neutral Goals
Is your company working towards achieving carbon-neutral events? If so, what strategies are you implementing to make this a reality?

“In 2023, we launched the BMA Carbon Neutral Pathway: a multi-year strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This framework governs how we refurbish, operate, cater, educate and collaborate – and it’s working. Over the past 12 months, we’ve significantly reduced our carbon emissions, introduced pioneering tools for clients, and enhanced every touchpoint of our operation in pursuit of a more sustainable future.”

And just for fun what is the best live event (concert, etc) you’ve attended? This is a hard question, I’ve attended so many, but one that stands out most for me was seeing Stereophonics perform at V99, you can’t beat Kelly Jones’ Welsh voice in the summer sun!
