UKEVENTS has backed the Government’s decision to invest in a feasibility study for a potential Olympic and Paralympic Games bid centred on the North of England, saying the proposal reflects many of the growth, skills, infrastructure and legacy ambitions being advanced through the proposed National Event Strategy.
Glenn Bowdin, Chair of UKEVENTS, said:
“The potential return of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the UK presents an exciting opportunity to showcase Britain’s world-leading events sector, whilst creating a lasting legacy for communities, businesses and future generations across the country.
“We particularly welcome the ambition to spread the benefits of hosting across multiple regions. Major events provide a powerful platform for investment in infrastructure, skills, transport connectivity, volunteering, culture, tourism and international reputation. Combining business and cultural events alongside major sporting events leverages the economic and social benefits even further.
“As the Government is developing a National Event Strategy, this feasibility study represents the type of long-term, collaborative thinking needed to maximise the economic and social value that events can deliver. UKEVENTS and its partners stand ready to support the work and help ensure any future bid delivers meaningful benefits for local communities, the visitor economy and the wider UK events industry.”
UKEVENTS noted that a future Olympic and Paralympic bid could help accelerate several priorities already shared across its partner organisations, including investment in event skills and workforce development, strengthening the UK’s event infrastructure, driving regional economic growth, promoting sustainability and innovation, and enhancing Britain’s position as a global leader in hosting major international events.
